The Town of Beech Mountain is headed up by a five member Town Council whose actions are carried out by the Town Manager. The Town Manager works with 55 full time employees to increase the quality of life for the citizens and visitors of Beech Mountain by supporting Town departments with quality, state of the art municipal personnel services. As a service provider, the Town relies on well-trained, motivated, caring and professional employees.

The Town has approximately 2,350 dwelling units on the mountain, 62 miles of road, produces water for consumption, treats sewer, provides both indoor and outdoor recreational opportunities, polices the community, provides trash collection along with a recycling center, houses E-911, has a Municipal Fire Department, and continues to grow visitor numbers while drawing in new business opportunities. An employee in this class plans, organizes and performs the planning and development activities including current and long range planning programs involving physical, economic and social future of the Town. Work involves high level professional planner responsibilities in the formation, installation, modification and improvement of the Town’s growth and development. Duties include staffing and consulting with boards and committees on development issues in the Town including zoning, subdivision, transportation, park and open space, community appearance, and related issues. Work involves coordination with a variety of other regional, local and state jurisdictions and agencies, considerable knowledge of the planning field, GIS, and local ordinances, and extensive public contact skills, facilitation, and conflict resolution skills. Work is performed in an office environment under the general supervision of the Town Manager and is evaluated through conferences, reports, and progress on planning issues and projects.  For a full job description click Town Planner Job Description.

Qualifications: Graduation from a four year college or university with a major in planning, geography, landscape architecture, or related field and experience in municipal, county or regional planning; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master’s degree in urban planning preferred.

Special Requirements: Applicants must possess or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license recognized in the state of North Carolina. Preference will be given to applicants certified by the American Institute of Certified Planners, or who will be able to obtain certification in a short period of time. Applicants must have the ability to obtain standard level I electrical, building, plumbing and mechanical inspection certifications as well.
