Due to increased wildfire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide, effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28, until further notice.

Co-existing with Wildlife

This notice provides essential guidelines for residents to ensure safety and peaceful coexistence with bears. As bears become more active, it is the responsibility of every resident to manage attractants and prevent habituation, which helps protect both people and wildlife.

Safety and Interactions:

Never Feed Bears: Deliberately feeding or enticing bears is illegal in many areas and leads to dangerous “nuisance” behavior.
Give Them Space: Never approach a bear.
Keep Pets Leashed: Keep dogs on a leash when walking and secure them when at home.
Report Aggressive Behavior: Report bears that are destroying property, following people, or acting aggressively to the police department.

If a bear finds food on your property, it will return. Reducing, securing, and removing attractants is the best way to prevent conflict. Thank you for doing your part to keep our community safe and our bears wild.

Town of Beech Mountain Commercial District Planning Process Continues

The Town of Beech Mountain has engaged a team of consultants headed by Hill Studio and Civic by Design to develop a plan for the town’s commercial district. They are working with town leadership, residents, businesses, and property owners to create a plan for a walkable, accessible center of town which reduces the traffic impact on the Beech Mountain Parkway and allows space for mixed-use residential and retail, services, dining, and lodging. The consulting team includes planners, architects, transportation consultants, data analysts, and economists. Meetings with community members began in April, and a series of public sessions took place in May. Additional sessions will be at The Venue at Boulder Creek, 1001 Beech Mountain Parkway. Some sessions are designed to gather comments and feedback, while others are non-interactive presentations of information. The dates and topics are:

This will help you understand what your friends and neighbors discussed with the consulting team in April and May. Those conversations have resulted in the concepts the team will be discussing with us at the July meetings.

This will be a long-term plan, which envisions careful, sustainable growth over twenty years. Local Wellhead Protection Program Plan Notice

The Town of Beech Mountain, with assistance from the North Carolina Rural Water Association, is in the process of developing a Local Wellhead Protection Program Plan. This is a voluntary program intended to assist us in protecting the system’s water supply from contamination, and to identify vulnerable areas around our well called the “Wellhead Protection Area”. Another goal of this program is to make residents and businesses aware that chemicals and other pollutants spilled or dumped in the vicinity of the “Wellhead Protection Area” can be drawn into the well, possibly contaminating the system’s drinking water supply.

The town is asking for your assistance in developing this program. You are invited to review the program and submit any comments or suggestions to the town. All written public comments will be reviewed by the Wellhead Protection Committee, and any suggestions or comments that may be beneficial will be incorporated into the program. Comments on the draft will be received until May 30, 2025.
